Hydroponics Wick System – How Does It Work?
The hydroponics wick system is a method used to deliver nutrients to the roots of your plants through a “wick”. The setup is a pot with the desired number of wicks placed along the sides and hung through the bottom. The pot is then filled with some a growing medium such as soil or rockwool. The plant is placed in the grow medium. The next step is to setup a reservoir that contains your nutrient solution.
The reservoir can be another bucket or other container. The ideal method, depending on your space constraints or supplies availability, is to use a bucket of similar size to your pot. The wicks should be immersed in the nutrient solution and the pot should not be immersed. The object is to have the nutrient solution soak the wicks and be drawn up into the growing medium.
It is necessary to have the wicks alone carry the nutrients up to the roots to ensure that they do not stay soaked and get root rot. The plant will be destroyed if the roots stay soaked. The wicks should keep the soil or other grow medium at an adequate level of moisture. You must also take care to not allow the solution to dry out completely and leave the roots without water or nutrients.
This is just a basic overview of the hydroponics wick system. There are many more ways to use this system and some growers use this method along with other methods to create optimal environments and to give them the best plant product possible.
